Episode 99: Nope, No Innuendos Here...

Today's episode is (surprisingly) not as perverted as you might expect given some of the curves Orange Islands decided to throw at us... pun totally intended.  In fact, all of today's puns are intended. Ash meets another member of Kanto's Elite Four, learns a few things about Pokemon training and... uh.. enjoys the "view"...

Original Series Innuendos...
Sheesh, were they even trying to be subtle?

  1. Well 4kids really dodged a bullet there if Brock was still around who knows what could've happened in the episode, If Brock was there the entire episode would most likely be him trying to seduce Prima and then we would've had another banned episode. Also what with 4kids wanting to censor everything bad you'd think they would've added a bit more clothing to Prima

  2. Anne, so far, we have seen the champion from Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos, which respectively are Wallace, Cynthia, Alder and Diantha. Kanto's and Johto's champions were not shown. I mean, we have seen an unknown trainer win the Indigo League and Jon Dickson (Toshiya) win the Johto League. But, before their winning, should there have been a current champion, like in the other regions. If Gary (Blue/Green), differently from what occurs in the games, was not the champion, and Lance is already a member of Kanto's Elite Four, who could be the champion from each of those regions? Despite the fact that Lance is the champion in Gold/Silver and HeartGold/SoulSilver games, I don't think that, in the anime, this is valid, because that would mean that he is, at the same time, a member from one Elite Four and a champion from another. How would that work? I mean, if a new challenger emerge in each region, he won't be able to be at both places at the same time. What's your opinion on this?

    1. It's sometimes a little vague, especially before Advanced Generation. Lance is definitely a special case.
What Sinnoh shows us is that the Pokemon League Tournaments have nothing to do with being the next Champion. There is a formal process to challenge the reigning champion in a match for the title, as evidenced when one of the Elite Four tried to dethrone Cynthia. (He failed. Next time, maybe) We also saw that the Champion can battle people whenever they feel like it.
So the people winning the Tournaments, we still don't know what that gets them besides a trophy. Maybe the right to formally challenge the Elite Four? We won't know until Ash wins.
Given this, Lance may be the Champion for the Johto region and an Elite Four member in Kanto, or Johto and Kanto could share their Champion despite having different leagues. I don't see any real problem with that, or if Lance wanted to challenge all the other Champions and take their titles, too. He doesn't have to wait around Victory Road for someone to show up; the champions are always shown to have other responsibilities anyways.
So, it's really just a question of scheduling. When someone submits a formal challenge, they schedule when that title match will take place and Lance can fly back for it, just like Cynthia did. Its probably the same for the Elite Four, or else thousands of challengers would have been out of luck for all those months Agatha was running Giovanni's gym.
This is a really fun and convoluted topic, I'll definitely talk about it next episode!

    2. Yes, it's a very complex topic. But it's also very fun to speculate about it.

  3. I've found more information that may enlight the subject. According to Bulbapedia: "The Indigo League and Johto League share a single group of Elite Four and Champion; eight Badges from either region will allow a Trainer to battle the Elite Four at Indigo Plateau."

This information is from the games and only part of it can be true. The part that says "The Indigo League and Johto League share a single group of Elite Four and Champion..." can be true. On the other hand, the part that says "....eight Badges from either region will allow a Trainer to battle the Elite Four at Indigo Plateau." can't because, despite of having all of his Kanto's badges, Ash had to earn his Johto's badges, in order to compete at the Johto League.

Another important information is that, in the Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution episode, Lance is confirmed as a champion. So, if the first part of the Bulbapedia's information is true, Lance is the champion from both regions. However, the problem still remains because how can he be a champion and a member of the Elite Four at the same time (it coulde be possible, but that would be weird).

Another problem that I see is, if Lorelei, Bruno and Agatha were confirmed as members of the Elite Four, and Koga is just a Gym leader in the series, does that mean that Will and Karin will never be able to exist in the Pokémon anime and that Koga will never enter the Elite Four?

  4. One last thing, Lance could actually be the champion and we could have an unknown 4th Elite Four Member. I simply don't know.
